"We are now engaged in a great civil war"

As a living history organization, the 79th Highlanders aims to educate the public on life during the mid 19th century through display camps, demonstrations, and presentation.

Living History

What is Reenacting

Simply put, reenacting, or being a living historian, is the process for demonstrating  everyday life during a historic period.  For the 79th Highlanders this period is generally from 1855-1870 with the main focus on Soldier and daily life during the American Civil War for the purpose of educating the public of life during the mid 19th century; this includes attire,  accoutrements, activities and lifestyle if the times.  As a family organization, the 79th has Soldiers, camp ladies, and children that participate in demonstrating life in the mid 1800s.

Getting Started in Reenacting:

A Guide for New Living Historians

Stepping into the world of historical reenacting is an exciting and rewarding journey! Whether you’re drawn to the thrill of battlefield engagements, the artistry of period music, or the immersive experience of camp life, reenacting brings history to life in a unique and hands-on way.

Where to Start

The best way to begin is by connecting with an established living history group like the 79th Highlanders Living History Association. Many organizations, including ours, have loaner gear available to help new members get started without a significant upfront investment.

Building Your Impression

Many seasoned living historians have spent years—even decades—carefully assembling their kits, refining their portrayal, and expanding their collection of period-correct clothing, gear, and weaponry. New reenactors should start small, focusing on the basics before making major purchases.

Here’s a suggested approach:
✅ Clothing & Uniform – Start with loaner items and slowly invest in core pieces (such as a hat, shoes, or trousers).
✅ Equipment & Gear – Many groups provide loaner muskets, belts, and accoutrements while you learn.
✅ Research & Learning – Read about the time period, watch demonstrations, and ask questions!

Why Join a Reenactment Group?

🔹 Guidance from Experienced Reenactors – Learn from those who have been involved for years.
🔹 Access to Loaner Gear – Reduce the initial cost while getting a feel for reenacting.
🔹 Authentic Training – Learn proper drill, camp etiquette, and historical accuracy.
🔹 Camaraderie & Community – Join a group of like-minded individuals who share a passion for history!

Take the First Step!

If you’re interested in joining the ranks, learning the pipes and drum, or experiencing history firsthand, the 79th Highlanders are always looking for new members! No experience is necessary—just a love of history and a willingness to learn.
